Outline

This course introduces practitioners to the work of Professor Ferre Laevers and offers an overview of the Leaven Wellbeing and Involvement scales focusing on how to use them to assess and plan for children’s social and emotional development.
It breaks down the Characteristics of Effective Learning, explaining their links with PSED and the importance of these, both in the short term and long term, in relation to outcomes for children. This course supports practitioners in using the knowledge gained to plan more successfully for children’s development as a whole.

Description

To develop observation and assessment skills using the Leuven scales of Wellbeing and Involvement and Characteristics of Effective Learning.
This course includes tasks to be carried out to promote reflective practice and support practitioners professional development.

At the end of session 1 practitioners will be expected to complete a gap task which will be discussed at session 2.

Outcomes

By the end of this session practitioners will be able to:
  • Use the knowledge of the research of Professor Ferre Laevers in order to support the observation, assessment and planning process
  • Understand how the Characteristics of Effective Learning in the EYFS Framework underpin everything that practitioners offer in the environment
  • Understand how PSED underpins all areas of learning and development
  • Skilfully, through observation, intervene and guide children in their development using the knowledge of both the child’s emotional and intellectual abilities
  • Use their knowledge of the different ways in which children learn in order to plan appropriate activities and experiences
