POSTPONED: Understanding and Supporting Children through Trauma

Outline

Trauma Informed Science and Practice is developing rapidly, having a widespread influence on global health, social, educational care services and interventions. This two part course will introduce participants to the key principles of up-to-date Trauma Theory & Research that will be directly relevant to their role in supporting children and families in their settings. The course introduces what can be appear to be a daunting subject matter in an engaging, participatory way so as to inform participants not only with up-to-date theory but also practical strategies to spot signs and have tools to safely intervene early and know when to signpost effectively. Skilling Early Year’s Practitioner with new and safe approaches when working with Trauma can provide the Early Intervention which is crucial in supporting both children and their parents/carers towards transforming old response cycles into new positive approaches.

Description

Building a safe relationship is the first part of any trauma- informed support therefore the course will look at how practitioners can develop safe and trusting working relationships with infants, children and their families in their setting to: support regulation and de-escalation techniques and introduce practical, trauma-informed parenting strategies to support positive, nurturing relationships and safe, supportive parenting responses within the family. We shall also be considering how recent Neuro-Science research guides us to safely support Trauma in a non-triggering way with physical and practical interventions that support a child’s ‘Bottom Up Brain’ development (B. Perry) which you can use and teach to your families to use to support healthy brain development.
Finally, we will review the potential impact of working with trauma on staff, outlining early signs and symptoms to be aware of in yourself and your colleagues and ways to support yourself and each other with self-awareness, self-care and seeking support. The training day aims to introduce Trauma-informed theory and approaches in an engaging, fun and accessible way to equip staff with simple and practical strategies that support children and parents/carers in their families on a daily basis.
